The campus enrichment at Johnson Middle School designed by LPA, includes the construction of a new 2-story science and classroom facility dubbed the Exploration Building, a new gymnasium with drama, fitness, and band classrooms, the conversion of the existing MPR into the schools
new media center and food service hub, and improvements to the site including a new lunch shelter, new parking and drop-off, landscaping, and utility upgrades.
In collaboration with educators and designers, the Westminster School District envisioned a unique facility based on flexible spaces that can be reconfigured to support different class sizes. As different perceptual elements for learning styles require different types of instructional representation, each space was carefully designed to reach all learning styles.
Students and faculty can be inspired by their new environments which offer connections to the outdoors. The Exploration Center is completely transparent on the ground floor learning on display was desired by community members and activities taking place inside the labs foster curiosity, while large overhead doors extend classrooms into outdoor learning courtyards.
The new buildings help create a quad centered in the heart of the campus, fashioning a sheltered, safe, and student-centered space, and a variety of site features have been designed to stimulate discovery and to trigger spontaneous learning opportunities.
