An Evening with Patti Smith
Written by the iconic poet, artist, and National Book Award-winning author of Just Kids, Patti Smith's M Train is a memoir unlike any other. Told through her travels to cafes, cemeteries, hotels, and train stations around the world, Smith's drifting, meditative essays recount moments of her creative and personal life from her time spent with her late husband Fred Sonic Smith to a strange encounter with chess master Bobby Fischer and visits to the graves of Yukio Mishima and Sylvia Plath. But more than just descriptions of people, places, and encounters, her poetic reflections take on a life of their own punctuated by Smith's iconic Polaroid photos and woven through with ruminations that move in and out of dreams and reality, past and present, interior and exterior, and the vast landscape of creative aspiration and inspiration that has informed her life.
As M Train comes out in paperback, join us for what is sure to be a memorable evening with Smith. Following a reading and discussion of her book, Smith will end the night by performing several songs with musician and frequent collaborator Lenny Kaye.
