Sound Bites: Chop
Sound Bites returns for its second installment of monthly storytelling. This time around, the theme is "Chop". The night will feature the talents of Maine bluesman Samuel James, comedian Karen Morgan, Moth Vermont StorySlam producer Susanne Schmidt, and more TBA. We'll be pulling some choice moments from the Salt Story Archive to round out the evening as well.
A collaboration between the Salt Institute for Documentary studies at MECA, The Corner storytelling series in Lewiston, and Frontier, Sound Bites is a new kind of storytelling series. With a dedicated theme tying each Bite together, the night will feature regional Moth StorySlam Champions, locals sharing true tales, and audio and media pulled from the 43 years of Maine history in the Salt Archive.
Samuel James was born the last in a long line of performers including dancers, story tellers, choir singers, jazz pianists, and porch-stomping guitar thumpers dating back to the 1800s. His songwriting has been compared to Leonard Cohen's and his guitar skills to those of Jimi Hendrix. His critically acclaimed trilogy of albums, Songs Famed for Sorrow and Joy (2008) For Rosa, Maeve and Noreen (2009) And for the Dark Road Ahead (2012) for Toronto's Northern Blues label has gained Samuel praise not only for carrying on great traditions, but for being a true innovator.
Karen Morgan was born and raised in Athens, Georgia but now calls Maine home. A former trial attorney, she began her professional comedy career as a Finalist on Nickelodeon Televisons Search for the Funniest Mom in America. Since then, she has performed in comedy clubs from Carolines in New York to the Improv in Las Vegas to the Comedy & Magic Club in California. Her comedy can be heard on Sirius XM Radio and nationally syndicated radio shows.
In 2015, Susanne Schmidt was named New England Public Radio's - Valley Voices Story Slam "Best Storyteller", was the First Place and Audience Favorite at Extempo Vermont's Tournament of Champions "Tell Off" and a Moth Story Slam winner. Susanne is currently a host and the regional producer for The Moth in Vermont. Susanne has been selected to perform in The Boston Women in Comedy Festival, The SheDot Toronto Comedy Festival, Arctic Entries Alaska and The Green Mountain Comedy Festival. Susanne teaches storytelling at the Flynn Theater.
Sound Bites is made possible by generous contributions from Allagash Brewing Company and Toad & Co.
