The traditions of poetry developed out of the pre-literate past alongside parallel traditions of mysticism, occultism, witchcraft, and alchemy. In the poetic disciplines of ancient times, the line between poetry and magic was very thin, and the artistic manipulation of language was considered a powerful, and often dangerous, kind of magic.
The ancient poet Orpheus created poetry to be recited in rites of purification, absolution, and initiation into a mystic order, eventually becoming the mythological hero able to travel between the realms of life and death. In the medieval era, the Bardic tradition developed a plethora of poetic forms for charms, curses, litanies, and more - that were believed to have very real consequences when spoken aloud. In the 18th Century, William Blake used poetry as a vehicle for a complex series of mystical explorations of unseen worlds. And in the modern era, W.B. Yeats, inspired by Blake, married his poetic and occult practices, laying out a grand theory of aesthetics inspired by conversations with spirits in A Vision. Today, poets and other creative minds continue to find inspiration in the symbolic and visionary possibilities of magic, alchemy, and the occult. We will explore the intertwining arts of poetry and magic, looking at the techniques and traditions that overlap both. Well discuss how poetry has the potential to alter consciousness, to reveal hidden truths, and to make very real changes in the world, and practice a series of writing techniques to tap into the more mysterious parts of the poetic experience
