May Phang, piano
FACULTY SELECT SERIES Friday, September 23, 2016 Green Center, Thompson Recital Hall
Inspired by experiences this summer, DePauw faculty pianist May Phang's program begins with Beethovens last piano sonata. Opus 111 has been reverently described by many as sublime and transcendental. A turbulent first movement appears to represent lifes struggles, while the divine simplicity of the long spun-out second movement seems to indicate a certain peaceful acceptance of or elevation from earthly angst. The other composers selected for this concertLiszt, Messiaen, and Philadelphia-based Curt Cacioppohave very distinctly different aesthetic sensibilities. It is, therefore, a curiosity to discover, in their sonic expressions of the ethereal and spiritual, many similarities of musical language.
General admission: $10 Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free.
