PORTLAND STRING QUARTET performs Quartets by Haydn, Janacek, and Mendelssohn
On Friday, July 22 the PSQ will be performing String Quartets by Haydn, Janacek, and Mendelssohn.
Over its 47-year history, the PSQ has toured North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia, with four notable trips to Japan. They have held numerous residencies at colleges throughout the US, and have given multiple workshops for Venezuelas Orqestra Sinfonica Simon Bolivar, known as the renowned teaching and performing program El Sistema. Among their numerous commercial recordings are the cycles of chamber music by Ernest Bloch, George Whitefield Chadwick, and Walter Piston, which won the PSQ awards for Best Chamber Music Recordings from the New York Times, the Boston Globe and the Washington Post.
The teamwork skills of the Portland String Quartet, studied and documented by the Harvard Business School in 1983, continue to be studied by business schools worldwide as a model for small business team management. In 1986 they were proclaimed Maine Treasures and were awarded honorary Doctor of Music degrees by Colby College in Waterville, where they served as Artists in Residence for 20 years. The Quartet was presented with Chamber Music Americas 2013 Acclaim Award, honoring it for its decades-long impact on the Maine community.
