Join us at the Frontier for an evening of poetry-inspired music, including the Gideon Forbes Sextet and The Jazz/Poetry Project. All music heard will be centered around poetry. Gideon Forbes will be performing his set of compositions called "The Frost Songs", a ten part suite inspired by the music of Robert Frost. The Frost Songs is project from Gideon Forbes that showcases the poetry of Robert Frost. Inspired by the music of Frank Carlberg and Steve Grover, Gideon started setting poetry to music in 2012. This new project will feature a sextet performing a group of poems from Frost's A Further Range. The poems are realized through the The group will feature Taylor O'Donnell, Barry Saunders, Kinnon Church, Gary Wittner, and Nihco Gallo.
Jazz poetry of Betsy Sholl (former Maine State Poet Laureate/author of 8 books of poetry) will be performed in an interactive trio setting with Betsy, guitarist Gary Wittner, and saxophonist Jim Cameron. The trio will perform "arrangements" of Betsy's poetry set to music that includes, in various parts, pre-composed songs related to the text, free jazz improvisations, and sections of text phrased rhythmically with the music. This is an improvising trio in the true sense of the word - all 3 performers are listening and reacting to the phrasing of both the text and the music.
