Snap on 2&4: Cord Martin presents Valery Ponomarev
On Friday, May 27 at 8PM, we welcome saxophonist Cord Martin to the Jazz Cave for a special Snap on 2&4 performance featuring visiting trumpet master Valery Ponomarev.
Valery Ponomarev has been major force on the New York jazz scene since he emigrated from the Soviet Union in the 1980's. A member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers during that time, he was described by one reviewer as "the most biting trumpet player Art Blakey has had since Lee Morgan." He has remained in demand as a leader, sideman, and educator.
Cord Martin has appeared on the Jazz Cave stage many times, most recently when he brought saxophone great Don Braden to town last year, performing alongside him with a stellar local rhythm section. The combination of a visiting jazz great and a group of Nashville's finest brought down the house last year, and we think the same will be true this year!
Cord is also a dedicated and accomplished educator. He serves as Band Director for Whitthorne Middle School in Columbia. He shares his passion for jazz and inspires an interest in jazz in his young students, and was named Teacher of the Year in Columbia. His concerts last year with Don Braden and this year with Valery Ponomarev are part of a residency which puts these visiting masters in contact with young jazz band students in the mid-state.
The May 27 performance starts at 8pm. Doors open at 7:15.
Also on hand will be Jody Nardone (piano), John Birdsong (bass), and Josh Hunt (drums).
There will be two sets beginning at 8:00 pm in the Jazz Cave at the Workshop. Admission is $25 / $15 high school and college students with ID. Tickets will go on sale Monday May 16 at 10AM and will be available online on this page, by phone 24/7 at Brown Paper Tickets (800-838-3006) or during business hours at the NJW office (242-5299). A small convenience charge is added to online or 800-number purchases.

The Jazz Cave is a listening room, and we ask patrons to keep conversation to a minimum and silence cell phones. Audio and video recording is prohibited. Ticket sales are final.
