On Wednesday, July 6, we welcome Carrie Newcomer to Roots Revival Stage, the community concert series component of our Wednesday night worship service. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and we begin at 7:30 with an abbreviated service centered on one of Carrie Newcomer's songs, then she will play an hour-long concert.
Parking is available on 4 1/2 Street and 5th Street, and in the gated lot on 4th Street across from Foothills. Enter on 4 1/2 Street.
Carrie Newcomer is a songwriter, recording artist, performer and educator. She has been described as a prairie mystic by the Boston Globe. "She's the kind of artist whose music makes you stop, think and then say, 'that is so true,'" says The Dallas Morning News. She was listed as one of the 50 most influential folk musicians of the past 50 years by Chicago's WFMT and Boston's WBEZ listed her as one of the most influential folk artists of the last 25 years. Newcomer, a contemplative Quaker, cuts across secular and spiritual boundaries. In recent years, Newcomer has emerged as a prominent voice for progressive spirituality, social and environmental justice. Carrie internationally facilitates workshops and presents keynotes on the topics of songwriting, spirituality & vocation in secular, college/educational and spiritual settings.
Roots Revival is a worship service grounded in Americana/roots-based music featuring Martha Bassett and friends. We meet at Centenary United Methodist Church in downtown Winston-Salem, NC, on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
No one has ever left Roots Revival saying, "That was exactly what I expected." It's not contemporary, but it's not traditional. It's informal, but it's liturgical. It's contemplative, but it's fun. Each service is built around one or two "focus songs" (usually ones that are not explicitly religious) and a passage from the Bible that fits a given theme. You may not be able to expect exactly what you will experience at Roots Revival on any given night, but you can expect an atmosphere of welcome and invitation that comes through in excellent music, thought-provoking liturgy and preaching, the weekly celebration of communion, and opportunities for fellowship and conversation.
