Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio! Comedy Returns to El Rio is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig and El Rio. The show takes place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District. Comedy Returns to El Rio showcases an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent, progressive, LGBT and straight comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. Join us this month and help us celebrate our 7th Anniversary!
This month features a kick ass line up of Bay Area female comedians: Yayne Abeba (SF native, comedian, activist, Frisco 5 hunger strike spokeswoman), Zahra Noorbakhsh (just back from taping her podcast, Good Muslim Bad Muslim, at the White House), Robin Cee (regular touring opener for Sinbad), Yvette Fernandez (TV reporter/comedian), and Lisa Geduldig (your faithful host who was displaced a few weeks ago from her Mission District apartment of 27 years by a fire). Come hear about the hilarity that ensues after being displaced by fire.
Bios: Yayne Abeba's comedy makes you sit up straight in your chair and listen because she's got something to say. Yayne excels in the way she rolls jokes off that edge of comfort and finesses it with a tell it like it is teflon charm. Color her smart and powerful! Growing up in the diverse world of the Haight Ashbury, she gives us glimpses at different cultures: Ethiopian, American, and millennials. www.yayneabeba.com
Zahra Noorbakhsh is a feminist, Muslim, Iranian-American comedian, writer and actor. The New Yorker Magazine dubbed her one-woman show, All Atheists are Muslim a highlight of the International New York City Fringe Theater Festival, the largest multi-arts festival in North America. The show is an autobiographic romantic comedy about moving in with her white, atheist, infidel boyfriend and telling her Iranian Muslim parents about it. She is co-host of the podcast, #GoodMuslimBadMuslim, deemed a "must listen" by Oprah Magazine and recently taped at the White House! Noorbakhsh recently debuted her coming of age story, "Hijab and Hammerpants" on Snap Judgment. Stay updated on her shows and tours at ZahraComedy.com
Robin Cee is a whirlwind of fun energy: in a half second shes doing a crazy voice, then from nowhere she is doing a song parody and then shell nose dive into a crazy story, slam on the brakes hit reverse and go back to the original joke that she was telling before she so rudely interrupts herself. Some people have said that shes a caffeinated Carol Burnett or a female version of Robin Williams. She has performed in practically every state in the US including Alaska and Hawaii and has performed in Canada frequently and 20+ other countries, including performing for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Robin has performed at numerous charity events from People with Disability Club-Oakland to Humane Society-North Bay. She has also performed several times at top casinos in Las Vegas and is a regular touring opener for Sinbad. Robin was voted Comedian of the Year 2012 by the East Bay Express.
Yvette Fernandez is a smart, quick-tongued "citizen of the world" whose comedy reflects a journalist's wordsmith abilities. Her insightful wit examines everything from race relations to life as a cougar (or, una leĆ³na). The career trajectory of the television reporter doesn't usually start with investigative reporting and end with telling d*&% jokes, but Yvette Fernandez has never been traditional, and she couldn't be more proud. Turns out standing behind a microphone in a basement making people laugh is just as exciting as standing behind a microphone in a hurricane! It is only a matter of time before we see her on TV again. Whether it's on Comedy Central or America's Most Wanted remains to be seen. Yvette is based in the Bay Area but performs all over California and the Western US. She is the creator and producer of The Colorful Comedy Series, a showcase for comics of color to share their unique views, anywhere there's an audience! www.yvetteisfunny.com
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (now in its 24th year); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion. She moonlights as a bilingual (Spanish-English) publicist.
