Pasture Management Workshop Series
WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?
Small acreage farmers, producers or landowners with new or old pastures, mixed livestock farms, and/or haying operations.
$40 per workshop or $100 for all three Limited 2 people per farm Space is limited! Those who participate in entire series will receive a copy of Pasture and Grazing Management in the Pacific Northwest, a Pacific Northwest Extension Publication by University of Idaho, Oregon State University, and Washington State University
Please choose which workshop you wish to attend. To attend all 3, select "For All Three Workshops". If you want to attend one or two, please select the date that corresponds with the workshops below.
PASTURE 101 Thursday May 26 9:00am to 3:00pm Olympic Unitarian Universalist Church and Bent Gate Farms, Sequim
Topics included are: -Farm planning for livestock and managing heavy use areas -Mud and nutrient management -Why do I have noxious weeds in my pasture? -NRCS cost-share programs In the afternoon, we will visit a local farm utilizing intensive 24-48 hour rotation of cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and rabbits on 9 acres. You will learn about mobile and permanent fencing systems, irrigation systems, and interpret soil tests based on pasture management strategies. Presenters are Meghan Adamire from Clallam Conservation District, Cathy Lucero from Clallam Noxious Weeds, Kellie Henwood from WSU Extension, and local farmer Anna Swanberg of Bent Gate Farms.
PASTURE 102 Thursday June 7 9:00am to 4:00pm Chimacum Grange and Short's Family Farm, Chimacum
Topics included are: -Forage management and grazing systems -How to determine pasture stocking rates -Rotational grazing strategies -Plant identification grass and weed species -Pasturing animals near buffers and water sources. In the afternoon, we will be visiting Shorts Family Farm who manage a mixed grass-fed beef and hay operation along Chimacum Creek. Presenters included are Marty Cheney from NRCS, Joost Besijn from Jefferson Noxious Weeds, Jill Zarzeczny from Jefferson Conservation District and Roger Short from Shorts Family Farm.

Topics included are: -Pasture renovation managing pasture for optimal grass growth -Re-seeding and seeding methods -Species selection for optimal Western WA pastures -Hay quality and selection -Pasture evaluation for quality and forage testing -More grazing management and livestock nutritional needs Presenters include Gary Fredricks from WSU Cowlitz County Extension, Ken Drecksel and Brian Stahl with Kistap Conservation District, and Vicky McGarrity from Heyday Farm.
