A Chekhov Trio
American composer Dominick Argento is known for his lyrical operatic and choral compositions. His melodies soar, while the underlying accompaniment, with the added headiness of contemporary sophistication, will layer the emotions of the text with just the right pull on the heartstrings.
The first opera of Argento's on the program is "The Boor," taken directly from Chekhov's one-act play of the same title. The second is a lightly staged song cycle, interspersing Chekhov's love letters to his wife Olga with sections of the journal she wrote after his all too early demise
"The Seduction Of A Lady" is a midwest premiere. Richard Wargo's opera can only be described as Great Fun, with the libretto taken directly from Neil Simon's play, "The Good Doctor," an amalgam of some of Chekhov's short stories.
Part of Transgressive Theatre-Opera's mission is present the collaboration between artists who have focused their work on different yet rapidly converging disciplines. Come see and hear the city's finest operatic actors join with the city's finest actors with operatic chops wrap you in the Chekhovian ethos. Come cry until you laugh, and laugh until you cry.
