For one weekend a month, the newly renovated Vidiots Annex will be transforming into the VIDIOTS Cinema Selects micro-cinema, presenting special limited runs of new independent films, handpicked and personally recommended by Vidiots' staffers.
With 30 years of trusted movie recommendations under our belts, VIDIOTS Cinema Selects is upping the ante, seeking out and presenting unique, daring and entertaining films that demand to be seen on a big screen, with an audience. VIDIOTS Cinema Selects will bring the theatrical experience inside the video store with multiple showtimes and (reasonably priced) soda, candy and popcorn!
Our selection for May is Born To Be Blue, a drama starring Ethan Hawke as jazz legend Chet Baker, whose tumultuous life is thrillingly reimagined with wit, verve, and style to burn. In the 1950s, Baker was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of cool. By the 1950s, he was all but washed up, his career and personal life in shambles due to years of heroin addiction. In his innovative anti-biopic, director Robert Budreau zeroes in on Baker's life at a key moment in the 1960s, just as the musician attepts to stage a hard-fought comeback, spurred in part by a passionate romance with a new flame (Carmen Ejogo). Creatively blending fact with fiction and driven by Hawke's virtuosos performance, unfolds Born To Be Blue with all the stylistic brio and improvisatory genius of great jazz.
Friday night's screening will be followed by Q&A with Steve London, co-composer of BORN TO BE BLUE, moderated by Dan Wilcox (KCRW)
