TPR Cinema Tuesdays Series: To Kill A Mockingbird
The 2016 TPR Cinema Tuesdays Series continues with "To Kill A Mockingbird."
With our screening of To Kill A Mockingbird, we remember author Harper Lee, who passed away this year at age 89, and celebrate Gregory Peck, whose 100th birthday would have been April 5. Texas playwright Horton Foote won an Oscar for his adaptation of Lees classic novel. Set in a small Alabama town in the 1930s, the story focuses on scrupulously honest, highly respected lawyer Atticus Finch, magnificently embodied by Gregory Peck. Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man accused of rape. The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter Scout (Mary Badham).
In addition to Footes win, To Kill A Mockingbird also won Academy Awards for Best Actor (Peck) and Best Art Direction (B&W). In 2003, the American Film Institute named Atticus Finch #1 on its list of the Greatest American Film Heroes.
