Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents The Marcus Elliot Quartet!
The Marcus Elliot Quartet consist of young, Detroit based artist that have a strong passion for expression through improvisation and composition. Marcus Elliot (sax), Michael Malis (piano), Ben Rolston (bass), and Stephen Boegehold (drums), have crafted a very strong sound the past 2 years by playing together on a weekly basis at Detroit's own Cliff Bells every Tuesday night.They are constantly searching for inspiration from the musicians that came before them in this city by playing compositions of Detroit jazz legends like Marcus Belgrave, Sam Sanders, Lawrence Williams, and Donald Walden. They are all very committed to the music and understand the importance and power of melody and rhythm. The Marcus Elliot Quartet will be releasing their 2nd album "When the City Meets The Sky" this spring.
Marcus Elliot is a saxophonist/composer/educator who is quickly gaining recognition for his imaginative improvisation, and fervently thoughtful voice on the saxophone. Marcus began playing professionally in the Detroit Jazz scene when he was 15 years old. He was awarded a scholarship for his talents as a musician to attend Michigan State University to study with Wes "Warmdaddy" Anderson, Diego Rivera and Rodney Whitaker. After Graduating from MSU, Marcus has performed across the globe in places like Canada, Cuba, Barbados, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Indonesia, Jordan, Egypt, and many other countries. As a Band Leader, Marcus has led the Marcus Elliot Quartet for the past 8 years.
