Compelling, extraordinarySolomon Nunes Carvalho was an American Jewish artist and daguerreotypist who photographed the sweeping vistas and treacherous terrain of the American West when he joined John C. Frémont in 1853 on his Fifth Westward Expedition from New York to California. Carvalhos experience as a Jew on the Western trail was unprecedented, and his photography grants a window into the cultural exchanges that shaped America in the era of Manifest Destiny.
