Rebecca Kleinmann Quartet
Rebecca Kleinmann, flutes and vocals Alex Conde, piano Gary Brown, upright bass Marlon Aldana, drums with guest dancer Melissa Cruz
Rebecca Kleinmann is an acclaimed flutist, singer, and composer with a twenty year professional career marked by diversity and improvisation. In the words of Latin Grammy nominated pianist, Jovino Santos Neto, "Rebecca plays flute with the passion of a flamenco dancer." An explorer at heart, she rockets and flows between genres, one day leading her Quartet, the next performing with a Brazilian Choro ensemble at the Brazil and Beyond series she has been hosting for the last four years, and then later at night jamming in flamenco juergas with the likes of virtuoso flamenco guitarist, Jason McGuire and gypsy singer Kina Mendez. Rebeccas international career has taken her to perform on stages in Argentina, Brazil, Europe and Australia, including Melbourne's International Women in Jazz Festival, as well as being featured at the SF Jazz Center, the San Jose Jazz Festival, Yoshis San Francisco, and the Oakland Paramount Theatre closer to home. She has performed and recorded with world-class musicians including Jovino Santos Neto, Airto Moreira, Grupo Falso Baiano, Almir Cortes and Hermeto Pascoal and worked with great dancers including Rosangela Silvestre, Melissa Cruz and Clara Rodrigues. Currently, she is enlivened by her Quartet as well as her duo with Brazilian guitarist Ian Faquini. Their alchemy together has been heralded by master jazz pianist, Benny Green, as the balance of deep preparation with the unaffected abandon to go wherever the moment leads. . . Kleinmann is masterful and selfless in her ability and inclination of melding her sound with her environment." In addition to leading a rich performance life, Rebecca is a dedicated educator and currently teaches with the Oakland Youth Chorus.
For this concert, Rebecca brings together her newest quartet featuring amazing local musicians whose diverse knowledge allows them to honor the styles she most loves: Jazz, Brazilian and Flamenco music. The concert features original music by Kleinmann and Spanish-born jazz pianist, Alex Conde. The group will also feature compositions written for Rebecca by the great composer Hermeto Pascoal. Local musical treasures bassist Gary Brown and drummer Marlon Aldana round out the quartet with their virtuosity and creativity. This will certainly be a special evening!
