The acclaimed Los Angeles Clarinet Choir, an ensemble of 14 clarinetists under the direction of its Associate Conductor, Victoria Ramos, performs an international program of folk, jazz, and film-inspired new music at Pasadena City College's Westerbeck Recital Hall, Saturday, May 14, at 8 PM. Admission is $15 general, $10 students and seniors. Children under 12 are free.
The concert includes "Hazy Mountain Atmosphere" by Japanese composer Hiroaki Kataoka; the tango "Canaro in Paris" by Alejandro Scarpino arranged by Masciotta; the cool-jazz classic "Monochrome" for nine soprano clarinets by Peter Schickele, "Pater Noster" by Satoshi Yagisawa, and the groovy "Takumi's Boogie" by Bruce Stark. A show-and-tell of the instruments using themes from "Peter and the Wolf" will take place midway through the concert. The program is suitable for all ages.
Founded in 2005 by their principal conductor, Dr. MargaretThornhill, the LACC has been a featured ensemble at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFests in 2007, 2010, and 2011, in Vancouver, Canada, Austin, Texas, and Northridge, California, for standing room-only audiences at the South Pasadena Eclectic Music Festival and the Vandoren Ensemble Festival at UCLA, as well as concerts at libraries, churches, museums, schools and senior centers throughout Southern California. Members, who are selected by audition, typically hold college degrees in clarinet performance or the equivalent in private study. The Los Angeles Clarinet Choir has a mission of performing and premiering new original music for clarinet ensemble and is the dedicatee of many new works for this unusual medium.
