Butterflies are one of many creatures whose presence helps us understand nature's balance. Ephemeral and beautiful, they provide necessary natural pollination for a wide variety of plants. Join Inland Northwest Land Conservancy, the Dishman Hills and John Baumann, a local naturalist, conservationist and photographer, at Dishman Hills to learn more about the butterflies that were studied by Tom Rogers as he prepared to make the case for the conservation of the Dishman Hills Natural Area.

We will start at Camp Caro for John Baumanns short presentation on Dishman butterflies, where you will learn how and where to look for butterfly habitats within the Dishman Hills and surrounding areas. Butterflies are elusive, so be prepared with your own close-focusing binoculars, camera gear and, if desired, butterfly nets. Catching and releasing (please, no collecting) butterflies here for observation is allowed, and is encouraged by the Washington Butterfly Association to augment your learning. You will learn these creatures' tricks as they play hide and seek within the cracks of the bark on trees, camouflage on flowers or rest down low in the grass!

The Washington Butterfly Association just opened their Spokane Chapter in 2016, so please join us to learn about the mystical beauty of butterflies, and become a protector of these delicate species. Known butterflies in the Dishman and Iller Creek areas include the Milbert's Tortoiseshell, Monarch, Western Tiger and Anise Swallowtails, as well as some uncommon tiny Hairstreaks. Over 90 species of butterflies have been found in Spokane County, so there are volumes of butterfly lore to share.
