Built in 1810, on high ground overlooking Steam Boat Creek, this house established a distinct style of architecture which was reproduced, with minor variations, in plantation houses subsequently built on Edisto Island. It is the most ornate of the early Republican houses which remain on the island. Tradition attributes design of the house to James Hoban, architect of the White House, who practiced in Charleston during the 1790s. The Marquis de Lafayette visited the home of Captain Seabrook and his wife, Elizabeth, as he toured the U.S. in celebration of the 50th year of the country's founding. He christened the Seabrook's newborn daughter Caroline Lafayette Seabrook.
