The Transgender Singer: What we Know So Far, What We Don't, and Where We Need To Go
Butterfly Founder Sandi Hammond shares what she has observed thus far about possible best practices for working with transgender singers. Several members of the Butterfly Music Transgender Chorus will also be on hand to speak from their own experience. Considerations includes:
* pedagogical considerations for altering range through training * abandoning gendered clothing for performances/appropriate accommodations * abandoning SATB- now what? * accommodating the nonbinary and/or gender fluid singer * considering the impact of hormones on the voice * anxiety and distress over gender identity and its impact on learning * social and psychological considerations- music teachers are not therapists, but therapists can share some useful insights that will help teachers help this population * where is research today? * where should research go next? * what can voice teachers, choral conductors, and music teachers do to be more inclusive? * language and protocol that show you support your gender-noncforming singers * what questions are on the minds of voice teachers and choral directors? What are the concerns in the community?
This two-hour workshop is meant to be a beginning conversation for area practitioners to inform a longer workshop and research project in 2016-2017. If you can't make this particular date, please sign our mailing list! www.butterflymusictranschorus.org
