"Sober But Never Clean" at the 2016 SOULO Theatre Festival
SOBER BUT NEVER CLEAN Sunday May 29 - 7pm Red Sandcastle Theatre, 922 Queen St E
Creator/Performer: Richard Lett
Richard Lett tells the story of how his 30 year stand up comedy career began, and how it led him into the depths of addiction, and then to his triumphant return with his hit one man show Sober But Never Clean. Long-time friend and colleague TJ Dawe, who dramaturges and directed the show, was instrumental in encouraging Lett that doing a show about addiction in stand-up comedy could help a lot of people. (As Lett says in his show, TJ could lose his phone and do a show about it! When I went into recovery, he was adamant that I do a show about it. I just wanted to get out of the homeless shelter before I started work on it.)
Mark Breslin (CEO of YukYuks) saw the show at the Hamilton fringe festival and also encouraged Richard, asking Lett to do the show in all his comedy clubs. Now Richard is touring the show nationally at all the YukYuks Comedy Clubs, appearing at recovery conventions and doing fundraisers for treatment facilities, and (near and dear to his heart) private shows for the clients at the King Haven Treatment Center where he was a client.
As Lett put it Being able to use my abilities to be of service to people has given me new energy as an entertainer and bolsters my own recovery every day.
Richard Lett is a courageous, comedic artist turning the difficulties of his life into comedy gold. I am proud to support him. Mark Breslin, CEO/Founder, Yuk Yuks Inc.
On the night of the show, this single man transformed the unknown to the unforgettable. Richards combination of song, spoken word and monologue all delivered through his gravelly voice took us from the depths of despair of addiction and the elation of recovery and all points in between. Richard Lett delivers a great message wrapped in light and dark humor like a little chocolate hug a treat to experience. - Wayne Steer, Fresh Start Recovery Centre, Calgary, AB.
Letts timing, tone and delivery were pitch-perfect. He transitioned seamlessly between funny and serious and was as comfortable behind a piano as he was behind a mic stand. Its a good option for those who have struggled with addiction or recovery, know someone who has, or who just have trouble opening up without a drink in their hand. Its also a funny, fresh take on stand-up that transcends the genre. Speaking of stand-up, fans of the genre should definitely appreciate this performance, but the show pulls heartstrings as often as it provokes laughter. Raise The Hammer, Hamilton
