Brave In A New World
Brave in a New World presents the authentic experiences of incarceration and the challenges of coming home from prison in a unique melding of dance, narrative, and song.
The transition from in to out is scary. Doors opening to freedom dont necessarily remain so as the stigma of felon continues to mark the way. And how does one keep pace with the changes that have happened everywhere?
Through arresting visual and sound design, Brave in a New World conjures images of confinement and separation, hurdles and bridges, shadows of the past looming over the present, and the strength and courage of children affected by incarceration as well as their loved ones who have served their time.
The evening-length work features women who have re-entered society from York Correctional Institution with the professional Ensemble of the Judy Dworin Performance Project and the voices of children who have parents in prison.
The Judy Dworin Performance Project is committed to exploring issues of social inequity and social justice. In My Shoes and its sequel Brave in a New World are ambitious outgrowths of the residency work they began in 2005 and still continue at York Correctional Institution, the only institution for female offenders operated by the State of Connecticut and, now for the first time, at Cybulski Community Reintegration Center for men.
