JAZZ IT UP @ TONY'S CAFE with The Mike Kaplan Nonet in Concert
Come enjoy life with acclaimed jazz music artists in concert on the last Wednesday of each month at the popular Jazz It Up @ Tony's Cafe Concert & Dinner Experience. The event is hosted by Tony's Cafe, conveniently located at 21 N. Union Avenue in downtown Cranford, NJ, in association with the SunRex Entertatinment Group. The experience includes a choice of a delicious Music Menu Italian cuisine entree, dessert and a beverage. BYOB is welcome.. The authentic cuisine at this long established and wonderfully intimate venue, rated a top best restaurant by Menu Magazine, is a perfect compliment to the Jazz It Up concert experience. The concert series continues on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 7pm with the horn proud "big band" sounds of the irresistible Mike Kaplan Nonet in concert that promises to captivate the audience.
Founder Mike Kaplan (arranger/tenor saxophone) envisioned the Nonet as a unit combining the strength, cohesion and varied tonal colors of a big band with the spontaneity and flexibility of a small group. The Nonet features 6 horns out front, an intuitive rhythm section and plays original arrangements in a variety of styles and genres all filtered through the 21st century Jazz sensibilities of the leader and band members. In addition to featuring original compositions, the band also re-examines and re-works deserving compositions of others from Duke Ellington to Herbie Nichols to George Adams. Mike studied saxophone with Warne Marsh, Joe Lovano, Mack Goldsbury and Fred Amend and graduated William Paterson University with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. In addition to freelancing in the NJ/NY area, he has had his arrangements performed by the Composers Big Band and recorded by Orquesta Royal and La Progressiva.
The ensemble is looking forward to a special performance at this new monthly Jazz It Up concert venue in quaint downtown Cranford, NJ.
