GENIASS PRESENTS: An Evening With The Original Wailers
As Bob Marley and the Wailers began recording the album Natty Dread, among the songs was one that needed the perfect guitar part to elevate it from pleasant ballad to legendary classic. That song was "No Woman, No Cry" and that guitar part was created and performed by Al Anderson. Al then became the original guitarist for Bob Marley and The Wailers recording and performing as the lead guitarist for the biggest reggae band in the world. Over 35 years later, Anderson helms the ship that is The Original Wailers, still performing the nuggets.....songs made famous by Bob Marley and The Wailers...from that golden age of reggae while complimenting it with new songs performed by a crop of young musicians destined to keep the fires of roots rock reggae stoked. From his days touring the world with Marley and later, Peter Tosh, to his studio efforts on such seminal albums as Natty Dread, Survival, Legalize It, and Equal Rights, Anderson has been a central figure in the evolution of the revolution. A musician's musician whose post Bob Marley and The Wailers credits include Lauryn Hill, Ben Harper, Traffic, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Steel Pulse and others, Anderson has maintained and continued the fight of reggae's pioneers, having just released the band's EP Miracle.
Joining him in The Original Wailers is singer/songwriter Desi Hyson, native son of the Caribbean island of Dominica, who cut his teeth with the esteemed Joseph Hill and the group Culture, with whom he toured internationally for seven years. Hyson's time-worn vocal delivery and edge of the razor lyrics put the message back in the music. At the low end of the sonic spectrum is another past master of Joseph Hill and Culture, Steve Samuels, laying the bass foundation one bottom note at a time. A Jamaican native, Samuels has worked with such artists as The Itals, Glen Washington, Everton Blender, Abyssinians, Sister Carol, Half Pint and Cocoa Tea. On backup vocals is Erica Newell, who frequently records and performs with various members of the Marley family.
What results is the Miracle EP, a five-song set that came together under the production of legendary studio ace Karl Pitterson (Bob Marley and The Wailers, Burning Spear, Steel Pulse, Sly & Robbie, Toots & The Maytals) Grammy-winning producer Jason Corsaro (Green Day, Paul Simon, Duran Duran), and Anderson, himself. Mastered by industry icon Bob Ludwig (Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin), the collection delivers what Reggaeville.com called, "a neo classic...,that re-introduces today's listener to the spirit and substance of the vintage vibe."
