Celebrate the latest step in a journey deep into Nordic Roots music and culture with Kari Tauring and Drew Miller (Boiled In Lead). Following Karis second successful Kickstarter campaign, production of two albums Ljos and Svart (Light and Dark) is now complete, spanning many worlds from sweet folk songs to deep electronic journeys.
Ljos and Svart collect material that Kari and Drew have been playing together since the beginning of their collaboration eight years ago. Sung in Norwegian, English and Finnish, the music ranges from an electronic treatment of the Voluspa Edda (10th century poem telling the story of the creation of the world and its coming end), electro-runic interpretation of an Norwegian runestone, through original spoken word pieces, sweet traditional songs with voice and dulcimer, two soundtracks for dance performance, topped by a 17-minute improvised stav (stick percussion) spirit journey. Lynette Reini-Grandell contributed elements of her Finnish heritage, Scott Nieman created the final mixes, and Aneesa Erin Adams was commissioned to create the artwork.
This project also produced a limited edition special box which includes a 4GB flash drive on a stick containing all of Karis work to date, including her new book The Runes: A Deeper Journey and performance videos. The digital releases include full scholarly notes documenting the source material and Karis interpretation of it. Remaining copies of the "special box" will be available at the concert.
Ljos means light" and is centered around the beings who dwell in the woods and fields. These charming songs and poems have a lightness that balances the darkness that surrounds us.
Svart means black" in Old Norse, indicating the absence of sunlight and the beings who live deep in the earth. The music is dark and moody, with soaring vocals looped through a web of electronics and grounded by the pounding of volva Kari's wooden staff. Bring your staff and join us in celebrating the completion of this joyful journey!
