Sounds of Senegal/India/Brasil
Matapa in partnership with the Art Gallery of Hamilton is very pleased to present a musical collaboration like you've never seen, featuring Hamilton's own sitar virtuoso, Neeraj Prem, along with kora master Zal Sissokho and Brazil's MPD star Sérgio Pererê in concert.
These three artists who originally hail from India, Senegal and Brazil bring musical styles that are steeped in the traditions of their homeland, yet focused on the contemporary music scene. All have performed both as soloists and along with other artists all over the world.
Neeraj Prem brings the sitar's rich musical history into the contemporary music scene with compositions that reflect the tradition of technical difficulty, improvisation and poetic expression. He writes and records his own music as well as traditional pieces and is known for his mesmerizing performances. Neeraj is based in Hamilton.
Zal Sissokho comes from Senegal's centuries old griot tradition, where his family has been one of the keepers of oral history through song. A master of the kora, a West African stringed instrument, he has become a fixture on the festival and live music circuit since arriving in Canada in the 1990's along with releasing two CDS. He has played with a wide variety of other artists all over the world. Zal now makes Montreal his home.
Multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Sérgio Pererê is one of the leading exponents of MPB or Música Popular Brasileira - Brazilian urban pop music that draws inspiration from traditional styles like samba and baião along with his African roots, combined with international influences like jazz and rock. You may have also heard it called Tropicalia - a rich blend of musical styles usually accompanied by poetic lyrics that reflect Brazilian life. Sérgio comes to us directly from Brazil.
