The Steamie by Tony Roper
Set during the 1950s, the play takes place on Hogmanay in a Glasgow public wash house or 'Steamie'. As the washing is done, four women sing, laugh and cry their way through the last working day of that year, with a little help from the increasingly not so handy Andy. Portraying a way of life in the midst of change, The Steamie fast became a firm favourite with people of all ages up and down the land and, to this day, its popularity shows no signs of waning. Half a century on, the way we work may have changed but, whenever the play is staged, it can still strike a chord of recognition in members of the audience and have them rolling in the aisles with laughter one moment and wiping away a tear the next.
'We'll Swim Again For 'A That'
The Steamie is part of our fundrasing campaign to restore and fully renovate Govanhill Baths
The Govanhill Baths Community Trust are proud to announce that after 14 years of determined campaigning the historic baths refurbishment will begin in 2017. The total investment required to restore and refurbish our beloved building stands at £4.1 million . Much of this will come from sources including the Heriatge Lottery Fund, Big Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, Glasgow City Council, various foundations and trusts but some of the amount required must come from our own efforts.
We are almost there. The Trust needs to raise the final £200,000.
During 2016 there will be many ways to help us reach this target including coming to see our production of 'The Steamie' taking place in the original Govanhill steamie.
Come and see The Steamie and help us restore this beautiful building
