Fast Rattler CD Release Party w/ Bodhi Busick, Lee Bob Watson, & Easy Leaves
Fast Rattler fronted by Brendan Phillips, the son of Utah Phillip, will release their new CD at the Haven Underground with a little help from local favorite Lee Bob Watson and Santa Rosa based The Easy Leaves.
Fast Rattler was formed in Portland Oregon but last month Brendan relocated to Grass Valley to work more closely with Fast Rattler's most recent member, Bodhi Busick. Brendan met Busick last year after Fast Rattler played 2, back to back, sold out shows at the Tin House, one of which had Bodhi opening for them. Brendan was instantly drawn to Bodhi's strong voice and guitar playing skills but was blown away to discover the Utah had given Bodhi a number of hand-written songs that he never recorded or performed. Brendan knew instantly that had to change. So, Busick joined Brendan and Fast Rattler in Portland Oregon on January 1st, 2012 and recorded Fast Rattlers 2nd CD "Hand On The Plow"
The record consists of 6 tracks. The opening and title track "Hand On the Plow" was contributed and arranged by Bodhi. The song is a traditional song made famous by Mahalia Jackson that was sung during the days of slavery. Its message is simple: keep working and tending to the pursuit of Justice and better times will come. During the civil rights era, the song was updated with the chorus of "Eyes on the Prize" replacing "Hand on the Plow." Brendan contributed the next track, a largely instrumental string arrangement that displays the various band members' strong instrumental skills. Two tracks stand out and both of them Utah had a hand in. One, "Coyote" was written by Utah who asked Bodhi to write the tune. Bodhi came back with a Cuban infused arrangement with a tre cio rhythm at its core. Utah loved it but commented, "Bodhi, I could sooner learn to ride a skateboard as play that tune." The other, "Take It To The Streets" Bodhi and Utah collaborated in the writing with Utah penning the Chorus and Bodhi contributing the verses.
The result is rabble-rousing protest anthem equally as relevant to today's Occupy Movement as to the anti-war marches on the eve of the second Gulf War when the song was first written. Add in "Solidarity Forever", a classic of the early Union Movement, and Brendan's song for his father "Linger On" and you get a clear picture of a son determined to carry on his Dad's legacy but also to make his own path into genre's and musical inspiration's that signify the beginnings of whole new journey.
Joining Fast Rattler to celebrate the release of the new album will be Lee Bob Watson. Lee lived in the area for many years but has since relocated to Berkeley. Lee's musical career spans the decade with stints in all sorts of bands including The Santa Cruz Gospel Choir, Jackpot, and Happy Mayfield. Lee Bob released "Aficionado" a much-praised CD on Nevada City label, Grassroots records. More recently, Lee has turned his attentions to creating musical education opportunities in schools, filming musicians in Senegal as part of documentary crew, and producing live musical variety shows called "The Western Family Orchestra."
Santa Rosa based, The Easy Leaves, will also perform. The Easy Leaves formed north of the Golden Gate in 2008 when songwriters Kevin Carducci and Sage Fifield combined influences and distilled their first batch of original material. With both immersed in the diverse sounds of flailing rockers, gospel skeptics, and country outlaws- the resulting collaboration meanders from grassland stomps into personal spirituals, from minor swings to honky-tonk grinds, and conveys subtle grooves reminiscent of the golden age of R&B. They've crafted a versatile sound that never wanders too far from it's roots, while continually sprawling out in new directions.
