Truth in Song
This workshop is Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Learn how to improvise songs in the moment based on your personal truths, opinions and stories. Practice organic ways of rhyming, creating melody and finding the structure of a song as you go along. In a supportive and relaxed environment we will help you create musical theatre inspired by the styles of Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown and weave rich tales and scenes through teamwork and group mind. Suitable for intermediate to advanced improvisers with zero to lots of experience in musical improv. Ability to sing is not a pre-requisite.
Taught by Katy Schutte and Joe Samuel.
Katy Schutte trained at Second City and iO Chicago as well as with teachers from Annoyance, UCB and more. She is a Funny Women finalist and winner of the Brighton Festival Fringe Best Comedy Show award.
Katy has performed with the Maydays for 11 years, is half of the two woman long form show Katy and Rach, produces Geekeasy with sci-fi improv team Project2 and plays in the Destination podcast and live shows. She coaches long form teams and leads public workshops in England, Europe and the States. She has toured with Fluxx, improvised musicals with Music Box and Baby Wants Candy and notably guested in the London and Liverpool Improvathons, Grand Theft Impro and Messing with a Friend. She is also a sketch comedian, actress and theatre-maker.
Joe Samuel trained as a classical pianist and violinist at Royal Holloway University. He is the musical director of The Maydays as well as playing for Music Box, The Dreaming, Improvision, The Treason Show and a baffling array of European Improv troupes from Boston to Australia. He is jointly responsible for musicalimprovcomedy.co.uk including a long running podcast, interviews and backing tracks and is the co-author of 'Sing It', a book dedicated to improv and music.
Joe is also the show director of "Confessions" and "Happily Never After" and can juggle quite well.
