KPLU's 'Sound Effect' Live: "A Friend in Need" w/special guests Tom Robbins, Tim Durkan, Kimya Dawson, Melanie McFarland and Skerik's BANDALABRA!
KPLU's news and culture magazine, 'Sound Effect' (heard Saturday mornings at 10 AM) presents an evening of storytelling organized around the theme, A Friend in Need. Join us for radio made visual, including onstage interviews, a photo presentation and live music. The event is a benefit for the effort to Save KPLU, as the station races to raise enough money to stay alive and independent.
Our special guests:
--Iconic author Tom Robbins reads from his memoir about his days in community radio in the 1960s, and listens along with the audience to archived recordings of his 1960s broadcasts (courtesy of www.krab.fm, the KRAB archive), followed by a brief Q&A. He'll sign books after the event. Check out an NPR review of Robbins' latest book, "Tibetan Peach Pie": http://www.npr.org/2014/05/27/314614799/tom-robbins-takes-a-bite-out-of-life-in-peach-pie
--Seattle photographer Tim Durkan will talk about the hidden side of Seattle and what has led him to dedicate himself to documenting it. He'll share a series of his striking photos, chronicling the pretty and the gritty. http://www.timdurkan.com/
--Singer and songwriter Kimya Dawson will share personal reflections and a song or two. http://kimyadawson.com/
--Seattle writer and critic Melanie McFarland will give a live storytelling performance. http://www.mctelevisionblog.com/
--A recipient of the Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award for Alternative Jazz Group of the Year, Skerik's BANDALABRA is led by the endearingly saxophonic, punk jazz iconoclast and features three of his fellow Seattle hometown's most revered players: Andy Coe on guitar, Evan Flory-Barnes on upright bass and D'Vonne Lewis on drums. http://ragman.org/skerik-s-bandalabra
