House Concert: Ryan McKasson and Eric McDonald
Ryan McKasson (fiddle) and Eric McDonald (guitar, mandolin, vocals) are masters of tradition who purposefully explore its edges and what lies beyond. The result is alluring, complex, and full of spontaneous musicality. Devon Leger of Hearth Music and the KBCS program Sunday's Hornpipe says, "This duo really shows how two masterful musicians listen and play off each other." Their sound transcends boundaries and appeals to music lovers of all stripes. McKasson and McDonald are preparing to record their first album together. Ryan McKasson is a Tacoma musical treasure. He's been touring and performing across the country in recent years, so we're happy to have him back for a little while. McKasson has gained a reputation as a performer, composer, collaborator, and teacher. In 1996, he was the youngest to win the National Scottish Fiddle Championship. The next year, he was awarded a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance from the University of Southern California where he studied with Donald McInnes. In 2004, Ryan and his sister, Cali, formed a band, The McKassons, that released two critically acclaimed albums, Tall Tales (2004) and Tripping Maggie (2006). Since 2002, he has also been fiddler for a renowned contra dance band, The Syncopaths, has recorded with Hanneke Cassel on her albums Silver and For Reasons Unseen, and with Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas on their album Highlander's Farewell.
Eric McDonald is a fast rising face on the traditional music scene. A former student at Boston's Berklee College of Music, he is accomplished as a mandolinist and DADGAD guitarist. His refined accompaniment can be heard on recordings by artists such as Katie McNally, Brendan Carey Block, Pesky J. Nixon, Rebecca Wudarski and others. He tours as a member of the inter-continental Scottish trio Cantrip, as well as alongside fine musicians such as Will Woodson, Ryan McKasson, Connor Garvey, Andrea Beaton and others. Eric's debut solo release "Rove" is a combination album of mandolin/guitar duets alongside guitarist Bethany Waickman and a collection of traditional ballads, self-accompanied. Eric is a well-known instructor, having spent five years on staff at the Club Passim School of Music in Cambridge, MA, teaching privately and annually at summer camps such as Maine Fiddle Camp.
