Composer Focus Concert: Moondog
Louis Thomas Hardin, better known as Moondog, is something of an anomoly, even within the incredibly diverse musical environment of the 20th century. To start with, he was an American composer, blind from the age of 16, and could be seen selling his music and poetry on the streets of New York City, dressed in viking clothes. (According to him, his attired helped him avoid comparisons to Christ or a monk - he had long hair and a beard). As for his music, it reflects Moondog's anachronistic fascination with the art of counterpoint, as practiced by Baroque composers, and his love of jazz and the traditional rhythms of Native American music. He also wrote songs and played his own invented instruments. This concert will feature some of his piano music - canons (a favorite form of his) and jazz pieces - as well as string music and songs.
