Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda with Saraswati Band
Peacewave announces a Kirtan and Dance with Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda April 22 in Sebastopol. Inspired by the deep devotional mood of Indian singing and music, Jaya Lakshmi began leading kirtan with harmonium and 12 string guitar and writing her own devotional songs in the early 1990s on the island of Hawaii, shortly after receiving harinam initiation from Srila Govinda Maharaj, a great Vaisnava saint from West Bengal, India, who graciously bestowed on her the name Jaya Lakshmi, which means victory to the goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of fortune and spiritual wealth.
Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda are Oregon based musical artists in the genre of mantra music. They offer a combination of kirtan (call and response singing), bhajan (devotional hymns) and original singer/song writer compositions in the languages of English, Sanskrit and Gurbani. Alternating guitar, harmonium, keyboard, bansuri flutes and vocal weaving, they create a profound healing and balanced sound current (Naad) brimming with bhakti (devotion).
This spring they will be joined by the 'Saraswati Dream Band' which consists of maestro players Ankush Vimawala on tablas, Richard Cole on bass and Will Marsh on sitar and guitar. Will and Ankush will be offering Indian classical opening sets on most nights.
