Interactive Concert and Talk for Submitting Artists for "Pictures at an Exhibition Reframed"
A group of Malden arts and culture enthusiasts, MATV, and representatives of local cultural organizations announce a call to artists to create artworks inspired by "Pictures at an Exhibition," a suite of ten movements for piano composed by Modest Mussorgsky.
As part of this call, submitting artists are encouraged to attend this private workshop on June 11, 2016 to hear pianist Yelena Beriyeva discuss and play the ten movements of "Pictures at an Exhibition." Though many recordings of pianists playing "Pictures at an Exhibition" exist on Youtube etc., hearing Beriyeva's interpretation, particularly in person, will offer artists an advantage.
The original idea for "Pictures at an Exhibition Reframed," a multi-media event and celebration of the connections between the arts, came from the moving story of composer, Modest Mussorgsky, and his artist friend, Viktor Hartmann. Mussorgsky wrote a work for piano as a tribute to Hartmann after the painter's sudden and untimely death. The composer used the artist's paintings and the idea of an exhibition of his works to give shape to the music that became known as "Pictures at an Exhibition."
"Pictures at an Exhibition Reframed" seeks to continue this creative flow by allowing Mussorgsky's piece, as interpreted by pianist Yelena Beriyeva, to inspire visual artists in the Greater Boston Area. The result will be a juried show of two-dimensional art which will be displayed at a public performance of "Pictures" by Beriyeva in Jenkins Auditorium in Malden, Massachusetts on Saturday, November 5, 2016. The event will also include a dramatic presentation inspired by the friendship between the two original artists, a special high school art exhibit, and projections of select submissions during the concert. An additional exhibit of accepted artists work will follow in the gallery at MATV, Malden's Media Center, and will continue until January 12, 2017.
