Bernaroo Music & Arts Festival
For the second year in a row, the streets of downtown New Bern will be filled with some of the finest artists the state has to offer. Combining a love of music, visual art and vibrant culture, Bernaroo Music & Arts Festival is a family friendly, community-building event that showcases the rich talents North Carolina has to offer.
July 8th will kick off the festival with music at the Isaac Taylor Garden while July 9th will serve as an all-day downtown excursion highlighting local artists, musicians, restaurants and craft vendors. The evening will end with another marquee event at the Isaac Taylor Garden as well.
Friday - July 8th: Rebekah Todd & The Odyssey Wilmington, NC RIYL: Fleetwood Mac, Alabama Shakes Rebekah Todd is a longtime New Bern favorite that came from humble beginnings as a solo singer-songwriter and has flourished into a powerful leading lady that commands attention with her soulful take on folk rock and R&B. Rebekahs music toes the line between delta-blues, soul, folk and jam but ultimately lands in a place all her own. These live performances are brimming with energy and are as liable to get you shaking and swaying as they are to stop you in your tracks with powerful lyricism and emotionally evocative vocal prowess.
Brett Harris Durham, NC RIYL: Harry Nilsson, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Brett Harris is one of the states finest songwriters and on the heels of his long-awaited sophomore release, Up in the Air, you can expect to start hearing a lot more from him. Harris songs follow power-pop trajectories but are tinted with Southern style and flare. His songs are personal, yet relatable and traverse powerful topics with a bright sheen and polished sound. Harris has an uncanny ability to pin-point unforgettable melodies and expand them into brilliant tracks with simplistic yet awe-inspiring arrangements, making for an awesome live act youll not want to miss.
Ellis Dyson & the Shambles - Chapel Hill, NC Recommended if you Like: Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Dirty Bourbon River Show Ellis Dyson & The Shambles are a band that produces timeless music, bringing a rag-time swing style to contemporary folk rock. These whiskey-soaked anthems will get your feet stomping and bodies swaying and you'll be singing along to songs you'd never heard before. Their live show is nothing to balk at either, boasting an array of horns, guitars, banjos and bass, this raucous act will be the perfect way to close out night one of Bernaroo.
Saturday - July 9th: Arson Daily Boone, NC RIYL: Cage The Elephant, The Black Keys Arson Daily may be the youngest band on this bill, with most members still in college, but theyre also one of the most exciting and refreshing acts to come from western NC in years. Arson Daily performed at Bernaroo 2015s free daytime show at The Brown Pelican and had the place shoulder-to-shoulder and at peak attention, damn near shaking the walls with their gritty new take on blues rock. Whether theyre churning out their barn-burning originals or dropping surprise Chance The Rapper covers, Arson Daily is bringing a unique spin to their tracks and is doing so with equal amounts of unabashed energy and fine-tuned restraint. Night two is gonna get loud, yall.
SkyBlew Chapel Hill, NC RIYL: The Roots, Kendrick Lamar Few acts in the state have surprised us more in recent years than SkyBlew has. With the recent release of his full-length The Royal Blue Reverie, SkyBlew went from a young-promising rapper to a bonafide star, showing obscene amounts of talent in lyricism and production. His backing band, The Digi-Destined breathes life into already vivacious songs and provides a smooth jazzy compliment to SkyBlews acrobatic lyricism. Filled with messages of self-love, perseverance and positivity, SkyBlew is going to get you dancing, singing and most importantly, feeling the vibes.
Zack Mexico Kill Devil Hills, NC RIYL: The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth Zack Mexico is arguably one of the most visceral live bands in the state of North Carolina, between their on-stage antics and their sheer talent, youre liable to lose yourself in their all-encompassing sound. Firmly rooted in psychedelic rock, Zack Mexico will take you careening through their immense soundscapes and leave you reeling and begging for more. Theres hints of punk, surf rock and pop thrown in, but ultimately their sound is damn near indescribable and best experienced live. Things are gonna get weird, but how else would you rather spend your Saturday night?!
