Based on a 1812 French history of witchcraft and the occult, produced by the grandfather of Japanese anime, and considered one of the most anticipated restorations of 2016, Belladonna of Sadness is the final film in the Animerama trilogy (Metropolis, Astro Boy).

When a young peasant girl is raped on her wedding night by a villainous lord, she turns to the devil in search of respite in exchange for her soul. Her descent into godlessness unfolds as a wildly erotic, hallucinatory epic laced with an unexpectedly subversive account of female strength and the reclamation of power in the face of oppression and subjugation.

Director Eiichi Yamamoto infuses dreamlike watercolors with Freudian imagery and a funkadelic score by Masahiko Sato in this singularly psychedelic film, never before released in the U.S.
