For those born outside my home state, the Kentucky Derby is all thoroughbreds, Bourbon, ladies in hats, men in seersucker. But when youre from there, it isnt just a horse race. Its a holiday. As a child youd get a new outfit and, even better, out of school the Friday before. For most of us, the party doesnt happen in Churchill Downs, but in the homes of friends or family. Having said that, one of my best Derby memories is placing five dollars on MC Hammers horse in 1992. His name was Dance Floor and he finished third.
So with the spirit of Kentucky conviviality in mind, weve decided to throw a Derby party. Our buffet will feature fried chicken, baked beans, house-pickled vegetables, country ham sandwiches, pimento cheese, collard green salad, mint juleps, Bourbon sours, sweet tea, and, of course, bourbon chocolate walnut piejust dont call it Derby Pie. Wear a big hat (or dont), dress up (or dont), just come ready to celebrate my old Kentucky home.
