OLA SOL PDX 2016
Olá Sol! Hola Sol!
(Hello Sun!)

(A concert including piano, 6 string and 7 string guitar, mandolin, cavaquinho, and pandeiro)

Join us for an evening of sensuous melodies and rhythms of Brazil and beyond performed by local Portland musicians CHORO DA ALEGRIA, DUO BECAR, and GERARDO CALDERON.
Venue: TABOR SPACE is an intimate and beautiful room. Perfect for a close-up acoustic experience.

CHORO DA ALEGRIA ("Cry of Happiness") is a Portland-based ensemble dedicated to playing wonderful melodies of various Brazilian composers. Our group draws much inspiration from the genre "Choro" which has been loosely called "Brazilian ragtime". Beyond choro we include in our repertoire classic tunes of Bossa Nova and MPB.

DUO BECAR pay homage to the music of great Brazilian composers such as Heitor Villa Lobos, Ernesto Nazareth and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

GERARDO CALDERON plays music that embodies traditional and contemporary music from a wide variety of countries including Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, and Brazil. Drawing on styles and rhythms such as corridos, rancheras, boleros, bossa nova, sambas, and valses, Gerardo's performance uniquely demonstrates the musical richness of Latin America.

More about CHORO DA ALEGRIA:
Tom Pinit (bandolim/Brazilian mandolin) began playing stringed instruments before entering kindergarten. Starting with violin, progressing to electric bass, and most recently mandolin, Tom was bitten by the Brazilian music bug soon after taking up the bandolim.

Pam Beaty (7 string guitar, cavaquinho) is a classically-trained guitarist, who has been a long-time devotee of various styles of Brazilian music. Pam teaches guitar in the Portland area and has performed in several ensembles.

Peter Fung (guitar, cavaquinho, percussion) has been happily obsessed with samba and choro for the last two decades. Peter is founder of Portland's (OR), and annual Dia do Choro PDX, and an active member of Portland's samba scene.

Esteban Diaz (percussion). Affectionately know as the "Samba Tourist", Esteban is a talented percussionist who has performed with many Brazilian ensembles along the the west coast from San Diego to Seattle.

More about DUO BECAR:
Florence Deutsch started playing the piano at age 6 in her native Sibiu, Romania. She studied at the Scoala Generala de Arte (Classical Piano) and was among finalists in citywide, and regional piano competitions. Even as the Iron Curtain prevented many from traveling outside of Eastern Europe, her skills earned her travel to performances in Vienna and Linz, Austria. She later developed a passion for Brazilian music.

Sergio Botelho was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and started playing the guitar at age 10, soon becoming fascinated by the sultry rhythms and lush harmonies in the music of his homeland. He later fell in love with classical guitar, and today can feel at home playing both popular and erudite music.

More about GERARDO CALDERON:
Gerardo is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and music producer. Born in Mexico City, he grew up surrounded by music, dance and culture. Having studied classical guitar in Mexico City, he later immersed himself in traditional Mexican music including both folk and pre-Columbian forms. Gerardo has performed with folk ensembles in Mexico, Canada, New England, and the Pacific Northwest. He has also toured with choir and world music ensembles, and composed music and design sound for ballet, documentaries, short films, commercials, and theater companies.
Gerardo had the honored of being musical director of Circus Project band. He is also  musical director of Grupo Condor and Nuestro Canto, and has been a teaching artist for 15 years serving the greater Portland community.
