IU Singing Hoosiers - Sponsored by the Lakeland Community Concert Association
The Grammy-nominated Singing Hoosiers , from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, present their 66th season of entertainment and excellence highlighting what the ensemble does best: tight and captivating harmonies, top-notch vocal stylings, and innovative arrangements of tunes spanning the breadth of musical styles and genres. Dazzling choreography and a fun, energetic program that appeals to all ages are a part of every Singing Hoosier performance!
Directed by Ly Wilder, The Singing Hoosiers continues more than half a century of tradition as IU's ambassadors of song. The ensemble has entertained millions in 18 states and more than 26 countries, including Europe, Australia, the Far East and the Caribbean, appearing with such legendary entertainers as Bob Hope, Alan Sherman, Red Buttons, Tony Bennett, Duke Ellington and Indiana's favorite son, Hoagy Carmichael. The group has also performed with opera legends Sylvia McNair and Timothy Noble, as well as professional symphony orchestras, including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, Evansville Philharmonic, South Bend Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops.
With Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, the Singing Hoosiers performed at Carnegie Hall in 1995 and appeared on a televised PBS Christmas special with Mel Torme. The partnership with the Pops resulted in the release of several recordings on the Telarc International label. These include the Grammy-nominated "A Disney Spectacular" and "The Music Man." The group has also recorded "The Magical Music of Disney," "Hollywood's Greatest Musicals," and "Magical Musicals."
Most recently, the Singing Hoosiers traveled to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, China in 2011, as well as Brisbane, Sydney, and Adelaide, Australia in Spring 2014. There they performed in association with the Queensland Show Choir and former Singing Hoosiers drummer Robert Clark.
