My Name is Rachel Corrie
Director Andraea Sartison uniquely stages this one woman show with ensemble of incredible Winnipeg women: Gwendolyn Collins, Heather Russell, Gislina Patterson, Liz Whitbread, Erin Schwartz and Brittany Thiessen with design by Claire Therese Friesen.
The script, edited by Katherine Viner and Alan Rickman is taken from excerpts of Rachels journals and correspondence over the last decade of her life. The picture it paints is of a young woman who has a "fire in her belly"--- an unquenchable thirst for justice, forhope and a poignant belief that a single person can change the world. She is both ordinary and extraordinary, a regular AmericanGenX-er, yetset apart because of her ambition, talent for writing and worldview.
Debuting at the MayWorks Festival of Labour and the Arts May 5th-14th, 2016.
...Theatre has no obligation to give a complete picture. Its only duty is to be honest. And what you get here is a stunning account of one woman's passionate response to a particular situation. And the passion comes blazing through in Corrie's eloquent reaction to her father's inquiry about Palestinian violence. As she says, if we lived where tanks and soldiers and bulldozers could destroy our homes at any moment and where our lives were completely strangled, wouldn't we defend ourselves as best we could?..-
