Treating Trauma and Substance Use among Juvenile Justice Youth
OVERVIEW OF TRAINING
This session is designed for juvenile justice staff to learn about the nature of trauma and how it manifests socially, emotionally and behaviorally. Staff will gain insight into trauma behaviors of children or adolescent to better conceptualize the needs of those children who present in the juvenile justice system. Staff will learn about disorders associated with trauma and the importance of using appropriately trained clinicians and systems of care. This training will discuss the relationship between substance use disorders and trauma in children and adolescents. Juvenile Justice staff will learn about this combination of co-occurring disorders and appropriate interventions. Staff will participate in interactive activities to help understand concepts of trauma, substance use disorders and best practices from a trauma and systems perspective.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will learn the prevalence rates of trauma in children and adolescents.

Participants will learn about the types of trauma, the implications for adverse childhood experiences, and types of disorders associated with trauma.

Participants will learn about engagement strategies from a trauma informed care perspective Discuss perceived power and balancing the planning field

Learn the prevalence of trauma and substance use disorders

Learn about trauma and substance use disorder in the context of family and community

Learn about universal screening/assessment and models to address co-occurring trauma and substance use disorders

Participate in interactive activities to assist in staff being able to conceptualize the needs of this identified group.
