NYCHORAL Chamber Singers Concert
On Monday, March 21, 2016 at 7:30pm, the NYChoral Chamber Singers will perform a program of contemporary and impressionist music at The New School's new, intimate concert hall in the West Village: Ernst C. Stiefel Concert Hall, Arnhold Hall, 4th Floor, 55 W. 13th Street (near 6th Avenue). The Chamber Singers will be led by conductors David Hayes, Music Director of the New York Choral Society, and Michael Ciavaglia, Associate Conductor, and joined by pianist Eun Kyung Lee. They will perform Jonathan Dove's song cycle for double chorus and piano, The Passing of the Year; Josquin's Ave Maria Virgo Serena, Eenvalds' Northern Lights and Debussy's Trois Chansons.
NYChoral Chamber Singers is a smaller ensemble (35-50 voices) composed of singers from the larger chorus, and is conducted by Music Director David Hayes and Associate Conductor Michael Ciavaglia. This ensemble contributes to the mission of NYChoral (New York Choral Society) by increasing its presence as a performing arts organization throughout the city while promoting the art of choral music for smaller ensembles. The group performs first-class chamber chorus repertoire in different venues and offers expanded musical opportunities to its members and audiences. All NYChoral members are welcome to audition for the NYChoral Chamber Singers (separate auditions are held in the fall).
In December 2015 NYChoral Chamber Singers participated in the staging of a radical reinterpretation of Mozart's The Magic Flute at 80WSE Gallery, in partnership with NYU Steinhardt and the Berlin-based CHEAP Kollektiv. The production process and multiple night performance are being used as raw material by filmmaker Michel Auder, who will present A Film in Pieces at 80WSE Gallerys Summer Exhibition, on view from June 8 - August 13, 2016.
Past seasons of the Chamber Singers have included holiday concerts at the Harvard Club, the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity and the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. One holiday program featured the music of Benjamin Britten to honor the centenary of his birth, including A Ceremony of Carols with harpist Caroline Cole. In the spring of 2012, the group made their Lincoln Center debut singing with the Chelsea Symphony in a performance of Mario Jazzettis epic concerto/symphonic poem, The Profile, the Life, and the Faith Across the Notes.
