Songs of the Bygone: Traces of a Vanishing World
Featuring the premiere of On Music and Nature: Three Hopkins Settings by Ann Callaway, inaugural composer for Vocis New Works Project. The suite draws on the text of three poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins.
Voci's May 2016 performances will build on themes of loss and longing in the Callaway suite, with an exploration of ways of life that are forgotten, lost, and no longer part of our contemporary lives and consciousness, for example, being cut off from communications, traditional practices such as punching dough, or in the case of Henry Purcell, reminiscing on the spirit of a beloved composer who has passed. In addition to the Callaway suite, the program will include works by Bach, Brahms, Ligeti, Purcell, Gwenyth Walker, Alice Parker, Gustav Holst, Otmar Macha, Arne Melinas, Morley and Jeno von Takacs.
