Passionate about the piano and the harpsichord, keyboardist Lark Powers is pursuing a dual career and performs frequently in the United States, Mexico and Europe. She holds three Master's degrees--in piano, harpsichord and theory pedagogy--and a graduate performance diploma in piano, all from the Peabody Institute. Lark earned her doctorate at the University of Colorado in Boulder. A recipient of a Presser Award during her undergraduate studies at the University of the Pacific in California, she went on to win a premier prix in piano in 2006 after attending the Conservatoire National de Region de Paris. Recently, Dr. Powers performed duo piano recitals in Spain with her husband, Dr. Ricardo de la Torre, featuring the music of Catalan composers living in North America. They have upcoming recitals planned this summer in Mexico City and Paris. An active teacher, Dr. Powers was appointed to the faculty of East Central University as assistant professor of piano and music theory, and has been busy adjudicating competitions and presenting at conferences, including the recent International Festival of Spanish Keyboard Music held in Spain, the 2014 OMTA state conference, and the 2014 CMS South Central regional conference. Recently, Dr. Powers performed duo piano recitals in Spain. This May, their piano duo will perform at the 2015 OMTA state conference. Ricardo de la Torre was born in Mexico City, attending the pre-college program at the Escuela Superior de Música in his home town. He received a Bachelor's degree with honors from this institution in 2006 and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. Ricardo has played in concert venues in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Spain; including performances at the International Festival of Spanish Keyboard Music Diego Fernández in Almería, Spain and the Foro Internacionalde Música Nueva "Manuel Enríquez" in Mexico. His performances have been broadcast on Mexico City's classical music radio station Opus 94 and he has recorded for Indiana University's Latin American Music Center. Ricardo was a finalist and prize winner in several competitions in his home country and held grants and scholarships from different cultural and governmental institutions. In January 2008, he won second prize at the Eleventh Annual Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America, sponsored by Indiana University's Latin American Music Center and the Office of Education of the Embassy of Spain. The recordings he made for the Latin American Music Center as the result of this competition were included in the recently released two-CD collection "Piano de Pampa y Jungla", produced by the LAMC. This recording received high praise from Fanfare magazine and Ricardo's performance of Ponce's Prelude and Fugue on a Theme by Handel was described as doing "the piece full justice, projecting an almost Busoni-like ruggedness, and providing one of the highlights of the set." Currently affiliated with East Central University in Ada, OK, Ricardo is a dedicated teacher who enjoys working with students of various levels and background.
