Workshop - The Return of Afternoon Glee Club, English Madrigal & Part Book singing with Katherine McKee
One of our most popular workshops returns by popular demand! Long before it was a hit TV show, GLEE was a popular musical form, closely related to catches (see above info for our morning workshop about Catches), and the English madrigals of the 16th century. They were so popular that clubs sprang up to sing them during the 17th and 18th centuries, often after or during supper. and King George IV himself belonged to a Glee Club before ascending the throne. Our music director, Katherine McKee, has put together madrigals and glees from the 16th, 17th & 18th century from some of Englands greatest composers, including an homage to Thomas Tallis and settings of poetry by Ben Johnson, Shakespeare and Goethe. This interactive workshop is a wonderful opportunity for you to sing three centuries worth of English a cappella vocal works. Youll enjoy old favorites and hopefully find a new favorite or two, and possibly find out what it was like to sing from a part book as part of a dinner party. During the Georgian period Glee Clubs were all-male but we invite everyone to come and share in the fun! And, in the spirit of the supper club, we invite you to bring along a bottle of wine or other beverage and/or a snack or two to share afterwards (that possibly may include more singing so bring a madrigal or two to share, should you like!)
