Angels in America: Millennium Approaches
Theatre Coup d'Etat is set to make its mark on the map of Twin Cities theatre community.
Founded in 2011 by James Napoleon Stone and Peter Beard on the simple yet powerful belief that theater should impact, provoke, and not anesthetize. Theatre Coup d'Etat wipes the dust off classic favorites and shines them in a different light to inspire a new generation.hey've begun to fill a need for the raw and gritty in the cities' theater with "a ferocious production" (Twin Cities Planet) of Macbeth followed by an "impressively conceptualized and beautifully performed" (Gold Star Review) production of A Streetcar Named Desire.
Once again, Theatre Coup d'Etat is rolling up their sleeves and shooting for the heart with
Tony Kushner's award winning saga, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.
Winner of the 1993 Pulitzer for drama, Angels in America is set in the 1980s against a backdrop of conservatism, sexual politics, and the discovery of an epidemic cutting a wide cloth though society. Both a love story and a political drama, centering on a group of inextricably connected people whose relationships are disintegrating as a generation falls prey to a culture of greed. Kushner's dark, cynical humor captures the fragility of the human condition and his prophetic and sublime words pierce the heart and move you to tears. Angels in America was a turning point in history of classic American Playwright Literature and 20 years later is still considered a profound and moving theatrical event not to be missed.
Director Justin Kirkeberg (candid theatre) will be taking the reigns and heading up a cast of Twin Cities brightest up and coming talent:
Steven Flamm - Roy Cohn Peter Beard - Joe Pitt/Eskimo/Prior 2 Meagan Dowd - Harper/Martin Brandon Caviness - Louis James Napoleon Stone - Prior Meri Golden - Hanna/Ethel Rosenberg Michael Terrell Brown - Belize Katherine Preble - Rabbi/The Angel/Emily Alec Barniskis - Mr. Lies/Prior 1 Marty Moreno - Henry/Man in the Park Laura Ann Lewis - Sister Ella Chapter
Believing that Theatre should give back to the community, Theatre Coup d'Etat has teamed up with one of the Twin Cities most prolific charitable organizations, The Aliveness Project, whose mission is "to encourage self-empowerment and provide direct services for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Established in 1985, The Aliveness Project has been a beacon of hope by providing community resources and serving as an active leader in the HIV/AIDS community in the Twin Cities.
