The Ian Carey Quintet+1: CD Release Show for "Interview Music"
Bay Area trumpeter and composer Ian Carey ("a gifted musician [whose] original compositions not only draw on post-bop traditions but expand on them" -East Bay Express) returns to The Sound Room with his acclaimed Quintet+1 to celebrate the release on Kabocha Records of the group's fourth album, Interview Music. The group ("a highly skilled band of improvisers" -Downbeat), featuring local all-stars Kasey Knudsen on alto saxophone, Sheldon Brown on bass clarinet, Adam Shulman on piano, Jon Arkin on drums, and Fred Randolph on bass, has been a mainstay on the local straightahead jazz and creative music scene for over ten years. They will be performing selections from the new album (including movements from Carey's intricate and rousing "Interview Music: A Suite for Quintet+1," commissioned by San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music), as well as new arrangements of works from their previous albums Roads & Codes ("4-1/2 stars" - Downbeat), Contextualizin', and Sink/Swim. Admission includes a copy of "Interview Music" on CD. For more information visit iancareyjazz.com.
