DUO BECAR (Florence Deutsh & Sergio Boteho) pays homage to the music of great Brazilian composers such as Heitor Villa Lobos, Ernesto Nazareth, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Florence Deutsch started playing the piano at age 6 in her native Sibiu, Romania. She studied at the Scoala Generala de Arte (Classical Piano) and was among finalists in citywide, and regional piano competitions. Even as the Iron Curtain prevented many from traveling outside of Eastern Europe, her skills earned her travel to performances in Vienna and Linz, Austria. She later developed a passion for Brazilian music, which she is excited to share with Portland audiences.
Sergio Botelho was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and started playing the guitar at age 10, soon becoming fascinated by the sultry rhythms and lush harmonies in the music of his homeland. He later fell in love with classical guitar, and today can feel at home playing both popular and erudite music.
Claudio Mello received Classical Guitar training as a teenager, growing up in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, where he was born. Claudio likes to play a range of Brazilian music styles including samba, bossa nova, choros and forro. For the past 15 years Claudio has lived in Portland, where he is a researcher at OHSU and plays with local Choro and Portuguese Fado groups.
Tim Connell is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and a virtuoso mandolinist with over twenty-five years professional performing experience. Having created a sophisticated and original global style on the mandolin, Tim is regarded as one of the top North American interpreters of Brazilian choro on the mandolin. Tim has also developed his own unique voice for the instrument, described in a Mandolin Magazine cover story as fiery and energetic, soulful and evocative.
Bahia Brazil Art Center (BBAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing Brazilian culture with Portland, Oregon through movement, music and arts. Funds generated through Celebrate Brazil will launch BBACs 2016 outreach campaign. The campaign's goals are aimed at presenting a wider variety of cultural events and experiences to Portland audiences. In addition to the current classes and events we want to create a richer community by promoting intercultural exchanges through panel discussions, film presentations, book clubs, Portuguese classes for children and adults, poetry readings, family get-togethers, game nights, and performances in public schools and other venues in the Portland metro area.
Mestre Almiro, the founder of Bahia Brazil Art Center, is a Capoeira Master and former teacher at Academia do Mestre Bimba in Salvador, Bahia, the first official Capoeira Regional school in Brazil. In 1986 Mestre Almiro was brought to Portland by Cathy Evelshin, to teach Capoeira at Portland State University. Since then he has been living in Portland, working to promote understanding and appreciation for the Brazilian culture in the US.
