The Art of the Milliner: An Introduction to Hatmaking and Design.
This 90 minute class will cover the basics of fashionable headwear design and fabrication. While learning the steps involved, the history of hats and hat making will be discussed.
Some of the techniques explained and demonstrated will be:
The blocking of a felt mini-top hat, including the wetting and stretching of felt. The technique of finishing a hat, including sewing in the wire for the brim and the sewing of the band ribbon. Several approaches to decorating the finished hat will also be covered. These are: 1- Ribbon placement and stitching. 2- Tailored bow making. 3- The curling and sewing of feathers.
This is a hands on lecture and demonstration. Afterward there will be mini-Victorian style top hats to practice the various decorating techniques on... and of course wear home!
Unlike most of the NYNCS lectures this one has a small fee to cover material cost. It is a mere $10.00 and is payable through the link below. HOWEVER, this class is limited to the first 15 persons who respond since spacing and materials are limited. As with all NYNCS lectures, presentations, and demonstrations you do not have to be a member to participate. They are always open to the public.
